Food Safety Supervision Skillset - NSW Food Safety Supervisor certificate

This course includes the nationally accredited units SITXFSA001 Use hygienic practices for food safety and SITXFSA002 Participate in safe food handling practices. The course is suitable for designated food safety supervisors (as required by NSW Food Act 2003) within organisations who have overall responsibilities for the implementation of the Food Safety Plan. This may include cooks, chefs, caterers, kitchen hands, and food and beverage attendants.

 

Please Note: This is an online course delivered via an online learning platform and as such has technology requirements and support limitations. You are responsible for and must have access to these requirements to do this course. We strongly recommend if you do not have access to the technology requirements, are unsure of or inexperienced with using a web based platform such as those used in online learning environments you should not enrol in this course. Technical requirements

To complete this course you will require access to a computer that has a recent operating system (eg: Windows 10). In addition you will need access to the internet and Google Chrome web browser. YOU CANNOT COMPLETE THIS COURSE ON A MOBILE PHONE. This course also requires you to have good to excellent digital capability with experience using web-browsers and navigating within web-based platforms as this course is solely delivered in an on-line format. You will enrol on-line and access a web based learning platform through our student portal to undertake the course which will be communicated to you via email upon successful enrolment.

Support with an experienced Trainer is available via email should you need help with the course work or assessment requirements. Unfortunately, general IT support and troubleshooting is not part of our course support and if needed will be your responsibility to source.

Who should do this course?

This course is for food safety supervisors working in tourism, hospitality and catering organisations with permanent or temporary kitchen premises, and smaller food preparation or bar areas - within New South Wales (NSW). The course is suitable for designated food safety supervisors (as required by The Food Act 2003 (NSW)), which requires certain food businesses in the NSW hospitality and retail food service sector to have at least one trained Food Safety Supervisor (FSS). This may include cooks, chefs, caterers, kitchen hands, and food and beverage attendants. Please note, should you choose to enrol in this course your personal information will be provided to the NSW Food Authority as part of the NSW Food Safety Supervisor certificate process.

What does the course cover?

This course provides a set of skills to work hygienically when handling food and to ensure the safety of food during its storage, preparation, display, service, and disposal. The course is mostly theory-based. A designated Food Safety Supervisor is required to hold both Level 1 and Level 2 units in Victoria, NSW (to be renewed every 5 years) and Queensland.

How long does the course take?

This is a self-paced online course and can be completed at your own pace. However, it must be completed within 6 weeks from commencement. The time needed to complete this course is 9-15 hours depending on your past experience and learning ability. This course requires completion of both SITXFSA001 & SITXFSA002 units and covers additional content required by the NSW Food Authority.

Assessment

This course requires the completion of six assessment tasks across both units.

  1. eQuiz - self-marking tests for both SITXFSA001 & SITXFSA002
  2. Logbook - to record safe food handling practices
  3. Project - with four tasks
  4. Short Answer Questions - questions for both SITXFSA001 & SITXFSA002 requiring written answers
What certification will students get?

Participants that complete this course will receive the NSW Food Authority Food Safety Supervisor certificate PLUS a nationally accredited Statement of Attainment for both the units with the wording This unit of competency from the SIT Tourism, Travel and Hospitality Training Package provide a set of skills to work hygienically when handling food and supervising the safety of food during its storage, preparation, display, service, and disposal.

Please note that certification requirements apply at a state and territory level to individuals involved in food handling or supervision. Food safety legislative and knowledge requirements may differ across borders. Certification in some States relies on the achievement of SITXFSA001 Use hygienic practices for food safety and SITXFSA002 Participate in safe food handling practices.

Should you wish to cancel your enrolment prior to commencing course work a cancellation fee of $50 will apply.
Should you wish to cancel your enrolment after commencing any course work there is no refund payable.
